New Sails 2026 – Square-Top Mainsail

After the headsail was replaced in 2025, SUNCE was given a new mainsail for the 2026 season. As with the headsail, the Lagoon first release standard was used again. The original sails, which are manufactured by Incidence-Sails in Brest, were specially developed for the Lagoon 450F according to Lagoon’s specifications and have also proven their worth on SUNCE over the years.

For the mainsail, however, the opportunity was taken to change from the standard mainsail with a diagonally cut top to the further optimized original square-top sail with a straight upper sail edge.

The slightly larger sail area of 2 m2 more is not the real deciding factor; with a total sail area of 80 m2, the difference is small and the boat remains very stable and very robust even in stronger winds.

In fact, the square-top sail on a catamaran can be adapted much better to the wind (twisting) in order to deliberately open the upper part of the sail (to lighten the load) or close it in order to take more propulsion with it in light winds.

Thanks to a patent from Insidence Sails, no additional lines or attachments are required for this; the sail can be set and adjusted as normal using a pulley in the mast top.

If you are more interested in sailing optimally with the square-top SUNCE, you will find further information in the manual (linked here: Manual) and in a very interesting article in the sailing magazine Yacht, which can be read free of charge via the following link:

Caution: The performance of square-top sails is higher than that of standard sails. Accordingly, the sail must be reduced earlier depending on the wind.

I am always happy to receive feedback on the new sail, but also on other points on the boat. Please use the contact function here on the site.
